About US

Sri Sri Nrusinghnath Ayurved College & Research Institute (SSNAYC), located at Nrusinghnath, Paikmal in the Bargarh district of Odisha, is one of the longest-established and most respected institutions for Ayurvedic education and healthcare in eastern India. Established in 1981, the institute has over more than four decades of sustained contribution to academic excellence, clinical service, research, and community health outreach. Guided by the vision of its founders and supported by eminent personalities in public service and healthcare, SSNAYC has grown into a trusted center for the study and practice of Ayurveda. Affiliated with Sambalpur University and recognized by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, and Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS), the college offers the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme.
The curriculum is designed to integrate the timeless wisdom of classical Ayurveda with contemporary healthcare standards, ensuring that graduates are academically sound, clinically competent, and professionally ethical. The institution draws profound inspiration from its unique geographical and cultural setting near the sacred Gandhamardhan Hills a region celebrated in Ayurvedic literature for its rich biodiversity and medicinal plant heritage.
This natural environment provides an exceptional learning ecosystem, enabling students and faculty to experience Ayurveda as a living, experiential science rather than merely a theoretical discipline. The campus itself reflects Ayurvedic principles of harmony between nature and human life, fostering physical, mental, and intellectual well-being. SSNAYC upholds a strong academic ethos rooted in discipline, ethical conduct, social responsibility, and clinical excellence. The teaching-learning process emphasizes a balanced integration of Shastra (classical knowledge), Yukti (rational and logical interpretation), and Anubhava (hands-on clinical experience). Students are trained extensively in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, while being encouraged to apply this knowledge effectively in modern clinical contexts.
Over the years, the college has played a vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery in rural and tribal regions of western Odisha. Through its attached Ayurvedic hospital, outreach activities, medical camps, and preventive healthcare initiatives, SSNAYC has consistently served populations with limited access to quality medical care. This service-oriented approach reflects the Ayurvedic philosophy of Lokapurusha Samya Siddhanta, which recognizes the inseparable relationship between individual health and societal well-being.
Recognizing the growing national and global relevance of Ayurveda and integrative medicine, the institution actively promotes research orientation, academic inquiry, and evidence-based practice among students and faculty. Special emphasis is placed on medicinal plant conservation, Panchakarma therapies, drug standardization, and lifestyle-based preventive healthcare, aligning traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with modern public health needs and scientific validation.
Today, SSNAYC stands as a confluence of tradition and transformation an institution committed to preserving the authenticity of Ayurveda while contributing meaningfully to its evolution as a credible, accessible, and globally relevant system of medicine. With a clear vision for the future, the college continues to strengthen its academic standards, clinical services, research initiatives, and infrastructure, aspiring to emerge as a model institution in Ayurvedic education, healthcare, and research.

About Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the ancient science of life that originated in India several millennia ago, is universally acknowledged as one of the world’s oldest and most comprehensive systems of holistic healthcare. Derived from the Sanskrit words “Ayur” (life) and “Veda” (knowledge), Ayurveda represents a profound body of medical wisdom aimed at promoting longevity, vitality, and harmony between the individual and the universe. Rooted in the Atharva Veda and elaborated through classical treatises such as the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, Ayurveda offers a systematic and rational approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
At the core of Ayurvedic philosophy lies the understanding that both the human body (Purusha) and the cosmos (Loka) are composed of five fundamental elements earth (Prithvi), water (Jala), fire (Agni), air (Vayu), and space (Akasha). The dynamic interplay of these elements gives rise to the three functional principles or Doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha which govern all physiological and psychological processes in the body. Health (Swasthya) is defined as a state of equilibrium among the Doshas, tissues (Dhatus), metabolic fire (Agni), waste products (Malas), along with mental clarity, sensory balance, and spiritual well-being.
Ayurveda adopts a highly individualized approach to healthcare, recognizing the uniqueness of each person’s constitution (Prakriti). It emphasizes personalized lifestyle and dietary practices (Pathya-Apathya), daily and seasonal regimens (Dinacharya and Ritucharya), ethical conduct (Sadvritta), and mental discipline as essential components of disease prevention and health promotion. Rather than merely addressing symptoms, Ayurveda seeks to identify and correct the root causes of disease, thereby ensuring sustainable and long-term well-being.
Therapeutic interventions in Ayurveda are broadly classified into Shodhana (purificatory therapies) and Shamana (palliative therapies). Shodhana therapies, prominently including Panchakarma procedures, aim to eliminate accumulated toxins and restore physiological balance, while Shamana therapies focus on pacifying aggravated Doshas through herbal formulations, diet regulation, and lifestyle modification.
Complementing these are specialized branches such as Rasayana (rejuvenation therapy) and Vajikarana (reproductive and vitality enhancement), which aim to enhance immunity, delay aging, and improve overall quality of life. In the contemporary healthcare landscape, Ayurveda has gained increasing global recognition for its emphasis on preventive care, chronic disease management, lifestyle disorders, and integrative medicine.
Its principles align closely with modern concepts of personalized medicine, wellness, and sustainable healthcare. By blending time-tested traditional wisdom with scientific validation and research, Ayurveda continues to evolve as a credible, effective, and holistic system of medicine capable of addressing modern health challenges while preserving its classical foundations.
